St. Daniels: A Beacon of Hope for Children with Disabilities

Our History

St Daniels Rehabilitation and Vocational Training Centre is a PVO for Children with Disabilities (CWDs). The organisation underscores the virtues of hope, freedom and love,   engendered through not-for-profit, apolitical and non-discriminatory interventions. St. Daniels was formed in 2015 and went on to be officially registered as a Private Voluntary Organisation 

(PVO) in 2017 under registration number PVO 32/2017. The organisation was founded by a parent of a child with autism. Her personal, professional experiences and Christian values facilitated her into this work. She quotes from the Bible, “I am inspired by John 13 verses 3435, I have information and feel the fire and need to help other children with disabilities and their caregivers, as this is like a calling to me and I am happy to do it”. The organisation has aspirations of providing services to children with disabilities in the  entirety of Zimbabwe but at present, it is operating in the Midlands Province, with current operations in Gweru District ( Both Rural & urban). The organisation has MOUs in all the two districts and authority from the Provincial Department of Social Development to operate in the province. The work of St. Daniels is premised on four fundamental objectives as stated below:   

OBJECTIVES:   
  • To provide specialist disability-friendly counselling and rehabilitation services to children with disabilities.   
  • To carryout capacitate building training for institutions and professionals working with children with disabilities.   
  • To undertake needs-based research and advocate for the rights of children with disabilities.   
  • To establish and support self-help groups for parents with children with disabilities.   

Towards servicing the above mentioned foundational objectives, St Daniels undertakes different activities including providing gender-fair, multicultural and disability sensitive counselling to the children themselves and all their systems to facilitate acceptance and independence (psychological wellbeing); Conducting Community Based  Rehabilitation including facilitation of medical rehabilitation in the community and at the centre; Skills training/economic strengthening project; Respite care services, Child protection and safeguarding interventions including sexual reproductive health rights dialogues, (SRHR) awareness and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and mitigation as well as research and advocacy work, all ensuring the concept of inclusiveness.

To be the awakening voice of love and a beacon of hope to children with disabilities and their families by capacitating them to have easy and sustainable access to psychosocial, economic and rehabilitative services as well as being an all-weather advocate for all Children with Disabilities (CWDs) towards increasing their so economic independence and wellbeing.
